Superintendent Wagner stepping down in June

Superintendent of Red Wing Public Schools Dr. Martina Wagner will leave the district at the end of the school year, Board Chair Jim Bryant announced.

School Board members accepted with deep regret her resignation at their meeting Monday, Feb. 5, 2024. The effective date is June 28, 2024.

“We remain united as a board. We have Martina here till June and are committed to the vision and goals that she has set forth before us,” Vice Chair Terese Bjornstad said.

Dr. Wagner came to RWPS as the director of teaching and learning in  2022, immediately taking a visible role in the district’s successful renewal of its operating levy referendum. When School Board members hired a permanent superintendent a few months later, she was their clear choice. She had students, staff and community members alike excited about the future, inviting them to envision “next generation Red Wing Public Schools.” Internally, the leadership message was “Five Buildings, One Team.”

“We as a board are 100% united on continuing on the changes that you have started here,” Bryant told her prior to the formal acceptance of her resignation.. “Not many times in your life do you meet somebody like you – you’re a breath of fresh air – and we’re going to certainly enjoy what we can accomplish while you’re still here in the next few months.”

Dr. Wagner timed her decision to allow for a smooth transition. “I encourage the district to continue to be Creative, Courageous, and United on behalf of all of our students and families so that we can finish the school year strong,” she said.

The board has contracted with the Minnesota School Boards Association to begin the search for a new superintendent.
