Homeschooling

In accordance with state law, we are required to ensure that all school-age children living within the boundaries of the Red Wing Public School District are being educated. When it comes to homeschools, the district must ascertain that they comply with state law and the district must provide the necessary information and forms to each homeschool for compliance.
For specific homeschool questions and to check out requirements, visit the Minnesota Department of Education website.
For the forms, see below.
The person or nonpublic school in charge of providing instruction to a child has annual reporting requirements to the local superintendent. RWPS has homeschool forms sent to the District Student Services/ED-FI Coordinator:

Deadlines

By Sept. 15

  • “Standardized Test Request” if you desire to have your child(ren) complete district or state assessments in addition to nationally normed tests.
  • “Request Form for District Pupil Health Services”.
  • “Request Form for District Secondary Guidance/Counseling Services”.

By Oct. 1

One of the following two forms must be submitted to the district:

  • An “Initial Registration Form for Unaccredited Nonpublic Schools” or
  • A “Letter of Intent to Continue to Provide Instruction” after a “Full Report” has been submitted in the same district.

In addition, the homeschool may submit by Oct. 1:
“Student Report for Aids to Nonpublic Schools” if they are interested in being reimbursed for eligible textbooks, standardized tests and individualized instructional materials. The reimbursement rate for the 2023-2024 school year is $95.69 per child. After the order has been received, please submit an “Expense Voucher” and original receipt to receive reimbursement.

RWPS class registration
Homeschool students may “Request for Shared Time” if they would like to request that a child take one or more classes from Red Wing Public Schools. Submit the form at least 30 days prior to the beginning of the class. The parent/guardian will be notified if we are able to schedule their child into the class.

Homeschool testing
Homeschool students are required to take assessment tests annually, and must present a record of completion upon entry back into the school district. Learn more here.
There are more than 20,000 students homeschooled in Minnesota each year, and available data indicates that only a small fraction of these students are completing the requirement.

Graduation from RWHS
If your child intends to graduate from Red Wing Public Schools, he or she must meet all the conditions for graduation as set forth by the state of Minnesota and Red Wing School Board.
You can request graduation or home school information by contacting Melinda Johnson at 651-385-4520 or majohnson@rwps.org.
