Driver’s Education

The Red Wing Driver Education program is approved by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and is taught by certified licensed instructors.

This class is for participants who are 14 years and 6 months old before the last class of the session. Students must be 15 to take the permit test. Payment and completion of a registration form requiring a parent signature is needed to secure a spot in the classroom.  For more information, contact Tonya Roth, 651-385-4565, tjroth@rwps.org.

  • Classroom Instruction: $180
  • Behind the Wheel: $220
  • Permit Test Fee: $10 – if taken with Red Wing Community Education 
  • Permit Test Fee: $0 – if taken at a State Testing Site
  • Driver’s Permit Fee: $29.50
  • Driver’s License Fee: $25.25

The steps to earning your license

STEP ONE: Complete 30 Hours of Classroom Instruction

Driver Education Program for those under 18 years old

The Red Wing Community Education Driver’s Education program is approved by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and is taught by certified MN licensed teachers. 

Community Education offers Driver’s Education Classroom instruction multiple times per year. Students who are at least 14 ½ years old by the last date of the classroom session are able to attend.

Classes are first come, first served and most classes do fill quickly. 

STEP TWO: Pass the Permit Test

Class D Knowledge Test (permit test) options:

Option 1: Test at Red Wing High School during a specified testing date. Permit tests are typically offered at the end of a classroom session. To test at RWHS, the following requirements must be met:

  • Be at least 15 years old by test date.
  • Completed 30 hours of driver’s education through Red Wing Community Education or will be completing Behind the Wheel with Red Wing Community Education. 
  • Turned in a completed registration form with parent or guardian signature.
  • Paid the $10 fee.
  • Paid at least $50 toward the $220 Behind the Wheel fee. 

Option 2: Test at an approved State of Minnesota testing location. The closest locations are Red Wing, Hastings, Rochester, or Eagan. Each location requires an appointment and may have different hours of operation. There is no charge to take a test at one of these facilities. Students must be at least 15 years old on their test date.

  • Select Schedule and Appointment, Driver Services, Class D Knowledge Exam
  • Follow the prompts.

STEP THREE: Go to a MN License Center and apply for your Driver’s Permit

STEP FOUR: Begin Logging Driving Hours and Complete 6 Hours with a Behind the Wheel Instructor.

If you have paid for Behind the Wheel with Red Wing Community Education your name will be placed on a waiting list. An instructor will reach out to set up driving times as soon as your name is next on the list.  

STEP FIVE: Pass Your Behind the Wheel Exam

To schedule a Behind the Wheel Exam:

  • Go to drive.mn.gov.
  • Select Schedule and Appointment, Driver Services, Class D Skill Exam – First Time
  • Follow the prompts.

STEP SIX: Go to a MN License Center and apply for your Driver’s License
